On 9th September 1915, cornered by British forces on the banks of the Buribalam river near Balasore, he and a handful of comrades held their ground through a 75-minute gunfight against a force many times their size. He died of his wounds the next day, at 35 — leaving behind the words that outlived him: \u003cem\u003eAmra morbo, jagat jagbe.\u003c\/em\u003e We shall die, the nation shall awaken.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch3\u003eWhy wear it\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBengal doesn't lack heroes — it lacks a habit of remembering them. This 15th August, while the rest of the country reaches for \"Proud Indian\" tees and Netaji prints, this one goes further back — to the man some historians call Netaji's own precursor. Their bomb struck the wrong carriage, killing two British women instead. Chaki took his own life rather than be captured; Khudiram was arrested, tried, and sentenced to death. On 11th August 1908, he was hanged at Muzaffarpur jail — still a teenager, and already a legend. The patriotic song written in his memory, \u003cem\u003eEkbar Bidai De Ma Ghure Ashi\u003c\/em\u003e (\"Bid me farewell once, Mother, I will return\"), is still sung across Bengal well over a century later.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch3\u003eWhy wear it\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHe didn't live long enough to see a single year of freedom, but he became the face of what young Bengal was willing to give for it. The print captures Khudiram exactly as history remembers him — young, resolute, a gallows noose in the frame behind him, a single streak of red cutting across the black-and-white portrait. Binoy died of his wounds on 13th December 1930. Dinesh survived, was tried, and was hanged in 1931.
