But the tiger was the least of what he took on. As the driving force behind the Jugantar party, he built the underground network that trained a generation of Bengal's revolutionary youth, working alongside Aurobindo Ghosh and drawing on the ideals of Swami Vivekananda. On 9th September 1915, cornered by British forces on the banks of the Buribalam river near Balasore, he and a handful of comrades held their ground through a 75-minute gunfight against a force many times their size. He died of his wounds the next day, at 35 — leaving behind the words that outlived him: Amra morbo, jagat jagbe. We shall die, the nation shall awaken.

Why wear it

Bengal doesn't lack heroes — it lacks a habit of remembering them. This 15th August, while the rest of the country reaches for "Proud Indian" tees and Netaji prints, this one goes further back — to the man some historians call Netaji's own precursor. The print brings Bagha Jatin's story to life: his portrait rising against a blood-red sun, the tiger at his shoulder, comrades fighting at the riverbank below, redcoats advancing along the water's edge — anchored by the verse rebel poet Kazi Nazrul Islam wrote for this very battle, naming Balasore-Buribalam the Haldighat of new India, standing alongside the legendary battles of Rajput, Sikh, Maratha and Jat warriors.

Wear it to put a forgotten name back into circulation. Wear it because "wearable heritage" should mean the parts of history that never made it into the textbook.
