Saptami morning. Before sunrise. A priest carries the Nabapatrika — nine plants bound together and dressed in a red-bordered saree, representing nine forms of the Goddess — down to the river or pond. She's bathed. She's brought back. She's seated beside Ganesh, and only then does Durga Puja truly begin.
