Description

In Puri, you go to the Rath Yatra. In Bengal, the Rath Yatra comes to you.

Bengal has loved Jagannath for over six centuries. The story goes that in the 14th century a sage from Bengal, Drubananda Brahmachari, dreamed that Jagannath asked him to return to Mahesh, on the banks of the Hooghly, and carve the idols from a neem log. Those first idols are dated to about 1396 and still stay in Mahesh today.

Ever since, the Mahesh Rath Yatra has been a Bengali festival of lanes, laughter and fairs. Bankimchandra set his story Radharani against the Mahesh mela in 1875. Today the same fair still brings jilipi frying in the open, kirtan groups, clay toys, wooden tops and conch shells, and children pull their own little chariots through the lanes of Kolkata.

This T-shirt carries that tradition forward: a contemporary artist's imagination of that wide-eyed, smiling face, drawn in gold on deep black and made to be worn.

For anyone who grew up with a paper chariot, a jilipi in hand and a lane full of drums. Wear it on Rath Yatra. Wear it all winter.

Built for the Bengali winter.
This is 240 GSM French terry cotton, the weight of a sweatshirt in the shape of a T-shirt. It's smooth outside and soft and looped inside, with a ribbed collar and cuffs that hold their shape. The double stitching at the shoulder, hem and cuffs is made to last many winters.

What does 240 GSM mean?
GSM is how heavy the cloth is. Our regular T-shirts are 180 GSM. This one is 240, 1.33x the weight, so it feels thick and soft, holds its shape, and keeps you warm through the winter.

Why it stands apart.
Heavier cloth than our regular tees, stronger stitching, and a fabric that feels as good in January as it did on the first day.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the story behind this design?
Bengal has loved Jagannath for over six centuries. Tradition says a Bengali sage, Drubananda Brahmachari, carved the first idols at Mahesh on the Hooghly, dated to about 1396. This T-shirt is a contemporary artist's imagination of Jagannath's wide-eyed, smiling face in the warm spirit of Bengali folk art, drawn in gold on black.
How is the Bengal Rath Yatra different from Puri's?
In Puri, three new chariots are built every year. In Mahesh, one permanent chariot built in 1885 carries all three deities, and the festival is a community fair of jilipi, kirtan, clay toys and children's little chariots.
What do 240 GSM and French terry mean?
GSM tells you how heavy the cloth is. Our regular T-shirts are 180 GSM and this one is 240, which is 1.33x the weight. French terry is cotton that is smooth outside with soft loops inside, so it is warm without being bulky and gentle on the skin.
Will it be too warm for Kolkata?
It's made for autumn and winter. It's perfect for cool mornings and evenings, and as a layer under a jacket or shawl. On a hot afternoon, a lighter T-shirt will feel more comfortable.
How is the design printed?
The artwork is an HD DTF print, done with ink that carries the OEKO-TEX ECO PASSPORT certification. That means the ink's ingredients have been checked against OEKO-TEX's safety standards, so it is gentle on your skin.
How should I wash and iron it?
Machine wash cold. Turn it inside out when washing and ironing to protect the print. Tumble dry on low if you use a dryer.
Is it unisex, and how do I choose my size?
Yes, it's unisex. Check the size chart image on this page and compare it with a T-shirt that fits you well. If you plan to wear it under a jacket, consider going one size up.
What if the size isn't right?
Please contact us within 3 days of delivery and we'll help you with a return or exchange.
