Description

Inspired by “Kabuliwala” by Rabindranath Tagore | Bengali Literary Illustration Tee

Somewhere in a Kabul valley, a girl grew up. Her father carried a piece of paper with her handprint on it, and never let it go.

That small, soot-smudged paper is the heart of Rabindranath Tagore's Kabuliwala, written in 1892 and still one of the most loved short stories in Bengali.

In a Kolkata lane, five-year-old Mini talks without stopping. Her mother is sure the Kabuliwala with his big bag is dangerous. Mini is sure he is her friend. Rahmat, the fruit seller from Kabul, answers her chatter with raisins and almonds. Every day, they laugh like old friends. Then Rahmat opens the paper. It carries the print of his own daughter's little hand, the only picture he has of her, and Mini is the nearest he can get to home.

A quarrel over unpaid money sends Rahmat to prison. Years pass. He returns on the morning of Mini's wedding, a stranger once more, to a girl who no longer remembers him. What happens next is why generations of Bengali readers still reach the last page and go quiet. The story was filmed in Bengali in 1957 and in Hindi in 1961, and Bengal has been retelling it ever since.

This T-shirt is a contemporary artist's imagination of that first meeting in the lane, made to be worn. For readers, for fathers and daughters, and for anyone who has ever missed someone across a long distance.

Wear it all winter. And when someone asks, tell them about the paper.

Built for the Bengali winter.
This is 240 GSM French terry cotton, the weight of a sweatshirt in the shape of a T-shirt. It's smooth outside and soft and looped inside, with a ribbed collar and cuffs that hold their shape. The double stitching at the shoulder, hem and cuffs is made to last many winters.

What does 240 GSM mean?
GSM is how heavy the cloth is. Our regular T-shirts are 180 GSM. This one is 240, 1.33x the weight, so it feels thick and soft, holds its shape, and keeps you warm through the winter.

Why it stands apart.
Heavier cloth than our regular tees, stronger stitching, and a fabric that feels as good in January as it did on the first day.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the story behind this design?
Kabuliwala is a short story by Rabindranath Tagore, written in 1892, about Mini, a chatty five-year-old in Kolkata, and Rahmat, a fruit seller from Kabul who sees his own faraway daughter in her. This T-shirt is a contemporary artist's imagination of their meeting.
What is the paper with a handprint in the story?
Rahmat carries a small sheet of paper with the print of his daughter's little hand on it, the only picture he has of her. It is the emotional heart of the story.
Has Kabuliwala been made into a film?
Yes. It was filmed in Bengali in 1957 and in Hindi in 1961.
What do 240 GSM and French terry mean?
GSM tells you how heavy the cloth is. Our regular T-shirts are 180 GSM and this one is 240, which is 1.33x the weight. French terry is cotton that is smooth outside with soft loops inside, so it is warm without being bulky and gentle on the skin.
Will it be too warm for Kolkata?
It's made for autumn and winter. It's perfect for cool mornings and evenings, and as a layer under a jacket or shawl. On a hot afternoon, a lighter T-shirt will feel more comfortable.
How is the design printed?
The artwork is an HD DTF print, done with ink that carries the OEKO-TEX ECO PASSPORT certification. That means the ink's ingredients have been checked against OEKO-TEX's safety standards, so it is gentle on your skin.
How should I wash and iron it?
Machine wash cold. Turn it inside out when washing and ironing to protect the print. Tumble dry on low if you use a dryer.
Is it unisex, and how do I choose my size?
Yes, it's unisex. Check the size chart image on this page and compare it with a T-shirt that fits you well. If you plan to wear it under a jacket, consider going one size up.
What if the size isn't right?
Please contact us within 3 days of delivery and we'll help you with a return or exchange.
