Description

The Rice That Started a Puja.

In the village of Jayrambati, on the day of Kali Puja, a woman named Shyamasundari had set aside rice for the Mother. She had prepared it with care, and to her it was no longer household rice. It was Kali's. But a man in the village, out of an old rivalry, refused to accept it.

She wept through the night, wondering who would take it now. Her daughter, Sarada Devi, later recalled what happened next. In the night, Shyamasundari saw a red-coloured Goddess seated near the door, who told her not to worry, because she would accept Kali's rice and be worshipped as Jagaddhatri.

The Puja that followed was made from that very rice. The whole village was invited, and every expense was met from it. At the farewell, Shyamasundari whispered to the Goddess, "Mother Jagai, come again next year." And she spent the whole year getting ready.

Sarada Devi, known to the world as the Holy Mother, came home to help every year. The Jagadhatri Puja at Jayrambati is still held today.

This one is for the Bengali who knows that some of our biggest festivals begin with something small: a refusal, a night of tears, and a love that would not give up.
