Description
Description
He was 18 years and 8 months old when he walked to the gallows smiling — the youngest martyr hanged by the British in India's freedom struggle.
Khudiram Bose was born in Midnapore in 1889 and joined the revolutionary underground in his early teens. On 30th April 1908, acting on behalf of the Jugantar-linked Anushilan Samiti, he and fellow revolutionary Prafulla Chaki set out to assassinate Douglas Kingsford, a British magistrate notorious for his harsh sentencing of young Bengali nationalists. Their bomb struck the wrong carriage, killing two British women instead. Chaki took his own life rather than be captured; Khudiram was arrested, tried, and sentenced to death. On 11th August 1908, he was hanged at Muzaffarpur jail — still a teenager, and already a legend. The patriotic song written in his memory, Ekbar Bidai De Ma Ghure Ashi ("Bid me farewell once, Mother, I will return"), is still sung across Bengal well over a century later.
Why wear it
He didn't live long enough to see a single year of freedom, but he became the face of what young Bengal was willing to give for it. The print captures Khudiram exactly as history remembers him — young, resolute, a gallows noose in the frame behind him, a single streak of red cutting across the black-and-white portrait. It's not a comfortable image, and it isn't meant to be.
Wear it because his name deserves to be as familiar as his sacrifice was total. Wear it for a martyr whose age at death is the detail people always find hardest to sit with. Wear it because remembering him properly means remembering exactly how young he was.
