Description
Order one coffee. Stay four hours. Every Bengali knows the rule. But did you know where it began?
In 1942, the Coffee Board opened a coffee house inside Albert Hall, a building on College Street that dates back to 1876. Around it stood the colleges and the bookshops of Kolkata's old student quarter. Within a few years, the tables upstairs had become the city's most famous place to argue.
Over the decades, Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak, Mrinal Sen, Amartya Sen and Sunil Gangopadhyay are counted among its regulars. In the early 1960s, the poets of the Hungry Generation made its tables a battleground of ideas. Literary little magazines grew out of its conversations. A Manna Dey song carried its name into every Bengali home.
In 1958, the management decided to close it. Professors from Presidency College and Calcutta University petitioned the government, and it reopened the same year. Bengal had refused to lose its adda. In 2020 it shut for 103 days during the pandemic, and when it reopened, people came back to their tables.
That is the Bengal this T-shirt remembers: adda, golpo and the argument that never ends. Under tall arched windows and slow ceiling fans, it was never about the coffee. It was the film you argued about, the poem you read aloud, the "listen to this" that began every golpo, and the table that always had room for one more chair.
This is a contemporary artist's imagination of that room, drawn in fine white lines on black and made to be worn. For readers, students, artists, and everyone who has ever lost an afternoon, happily, to good talk.
Wear it to your next adda. Wear it all winter.
Built for the Bengali winter.
This is 240 GSM French terry cotton, the weight of a sweatshirt in the shape of a T-shirt. It's smooth outside and soft and looped inside, with a ribbed collar and cuffs that hold their shape. The double stitching at the shoulder, hem and cuffs is made to last many winters.
What does 240 GSM mean?
GSM is how heavy the cloth is. Our regular T-shirts are 180 GSM. This one is 240, 1.33x the weight, so it feels thick and soft, holds its shape, and keeps you warm through the winter.
Why it stands apart.
Heavier cloth than our regular tees, stronger stitching, and a fabric that feels as good in January as it did on the first day.
