THE STORY
In the 19th century, on the streets near Kalighat temple in Kolkata, scroll painters who had walked from distant villages set up their studios. They painted the antahpur — the inner world of the Bengali household, the women's mahal — on single sheets, in flat colour fills and bold black outlines that became the signature of Kalighat art.
That world lives on this kurti.
THE KURTI
The Mahila Mahal Kurti carries two conversations simultaneously — one in the body, one at the hem.
The body speaks quietly — scattered fan medallion motifs in deep crimson, olive-green, and gold, inspired by the shankha chakra forms that have appeared in Bengali folk art for centuries. Small enough to wear without announcing themselves. Present enough to reward a closer look.
The hem speaks in narrative — a full Kalighat antahpur scene running across the bottom. A musician with her veena. A dancer mid-gesture. A woman reclining while others attend to her adornment. A jewellery chest open at her feet. These are the women of the Bengali inner chamber, painted in the visual language of 19th century Kalighat — flat colour fills, bold outlines, expressive faces.
The sleeves complete the story — each cuff carries the full shankha medallion, the sacred circular form that echoes through centuries of Bengali folk art. When the arms are extended, the kurti reveals its full composition.
THE PRINT
Every detail — the curve of the medallion, the expression of each figure, the open jewellery chest, the musician's posture — is reproduced through high-definition DTF (Direct to Film) printing using OEKO-TEX ECOPASSPORT certified inks. Independently verified to be free of harmful substances, safe against skin, and produced to the most rigorous international textile safety standards.
THE FABRIC
Made in white pure cotton — breathable for Bengal's climate.
THE FIT
A short kurti — hip length, V-neck with mandarin collar detail, full sleeves, straight cut. Designed to be worn with palazzos, straight-cut trousers, or a plain cotton saree as a blouse alternative. The relaxed fit is generous and comfortable — this is a kurti made for wearing through a cultural evening, not just for a quick appearance.

PAIRING NOTE
The Mahila Mahal Kurti shares its exact print language with the Mahila Mahal Saree — same motifs, same palette, same Kalighat source. Worn together as a set, they carry the antahpur world from the hem of the saree to the cuffs of the kurti. Each piece works independently. Together they are something else entirely.
WHO WEARS THIS
The Bengali woman who wears the Mahila Mahal Kurti knows what Kalighat painting is — and knows that most people she meets do not. She wears it to a cultural programme, to a literary evening, to an adda where someone who knows will look at the hem and say: this is Kalighat. Someone else will ask: where did you get this?
Both conversations are the point.
WEARABLE BENGALI HERITAGE
The Mahila Mahal Kurti is part of Smarteez's folk art heritage collection — limited editions rooted in Bengal's living artistic traditions, for the Bengali woman who wears her culture, not just her clothes.
