A song about a field. A story about who was helping.
Bengal tells it this way. The poet Ramprasad Sen was mending the fence around his field, and his daughter was helping him tie it. She left. A radiant girl he had never seen came and finished the work beside him, then vanished. Only then did he understand who had been holding the other end of the rope.
Mon re krishikaaj jano naa is the song Bengal remembers beside that story: the mind as a farmer who has forgotten how to farm, a rich field left untended.
In all of Bengali song, few moments are as intimate as this one: the great poet of Shyama Sangeet, a fence, a rope and a small helper. This is a contemporary artist's imagination of that field.
