Before Durga arrives as the ten-armed slayer of Mahishasura, she travels through nine earlier forms — Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Mahagauri, Siddhidatri. Each form is worshipped on one night of Navaratri, each carries her own vahana, her own weapon, her own story. Together they are the Nabadurga — the complete journey of the goddess, from daughter to warrior to giver of perfection.

This panjabi carries all nine, in sequence, down a single vertical strip — the way a scroll of Patachitra folk art once carried a whole story frame by frame.

THE PANJABI

Running down the right placket of white pure cotton, a vertical column of nine hand-illustrated panels — each Devi in her own frame, bordered by a red mandala-petal motif and punctuated with solid red dots, in the visual language of Bengal's traditional pattachitra scrolls. Read top to bottom, it is the nine nights of Navaratri, worn.

Each panel holds one form exactly as she is described in the scriptures — seated on her vahana, holding her weapons, her halo rendered in gold. This is not a single decorative motif. It is the complete Nabadurga, in order, on one panjabi.
