Owl & Fish Oversized T-Shirt — Bengali Folk Print on White Cotton

Long before it was art, Kantha was survival — old saris layered and stitched together, thread by thread, into something warmer, sturdier, and quietly beautiful.

Bengal's Kantha embroidery tradition turned worn cloth into heirlooms. Generations of women stitched running patterns of running-stitch dots, florals, and folk motifs onto fabric passed down through families — each piece slower and more personal than anything a machine could produce. Two figures show up again and again in that vocabulary: the owl, watchful and wise, tied to Lakshmi and the promise of prosperity; and the fish, a Bengali symbol of fertility and good fortune that still opens every wedding ritual and Poila Boishakh table.

This print takes that world — hand-stitched owls perched on flowering branches, fish trailing through leaves — and puts it back where folk art always lived best: on something you actually wear.

Why wear it

The design runs a vertical column of owls and fish down the back, rendered in the dotted, colourful stitch-style Kantha is known for, with smaller fish motifs echoed on the sleeves and a single floral branch on the chest. It's not a reproduction of any one heirloom piece — it's a tribute to the craft itself, and to every Bengali household that still has one folded away in a trunk somewhere.
