One Bengali artist believed divinity didn't need a halo to be sacred. Bold black outlines, flat fearless colour, faces reduced to their purest feeling — that was Jamini Roy's answer to realism. He painted gods the way Bengal's own folk art once did: not distant, but domestic.

THE PANJABI
